Healthy Living Serves as a Safe and Effective Menopause Remedy

It’s easy to become so conditioned to hearing about the benefits of a healthy lifestyle that recommendations barely register. We’ve heard a thousand times that we should eat a low fat, high fiber diet, exercise regularly, and stop smoking. Whether or not we act on that knowledge is another story. Until something happens that prompts us to make changes, unhealthy habits are often something we live with despite the harm we know they can do.

By the time women have reached their mid or late forties, chances are they have already made any adjustments to their lifestyle they felt were essential for maintaining their health. But menopause changes the status quo, and the effects of decreasing levels of hormones on the mind and body can and should serve as a wake up call. Menopause is the perfect time for women to re-evaluate decisions about how they live and what steps they take to manage their health.

Lots of Symptoms, But What about Treatments?

What changes during menopause that can make lifestyle choices so important? For one thing, women often begin to experience symptoms they find uncomfortable and disruptive. Hot flashes can interfere with work and sleep. Headaches may disrupt daily routines, and weight gain can make women feel sluggish and depressed. Irritability and mood swings may start to affect relationships, and feeling fatigued does little to improve a rapidly fading interest in sex. In the face of even one symptom women begin to look for a menopause remedy that offers some form of relief.

In discussing the traditional menopause remedy with their doctor, women often become alarmed at the risks associated with Hormone Replacement Therapy. Even though short-term HRT in low doses is generally considered safe, many women begin to wonder if the risks outweigh the benefits. Similarly, as more questions seem to be raised than answered about the quality, dosage, and side effects of herbs such as Black Cohosh, herbal supplements begin to seem less and less viable as an alternative menopause remedy.

Will a Healthier Lifestyle Really Help?

It is at this point that women may at last begin to listen, hear and implement the recommendations doctors make about lifestyle modifications. A healthier lifestyle is proven to reduce and alleviate many of the symptoms of menopause. A healthy diet, appropriate vitamin supplements, and regular daily exercise is the only menopause remedy the majority of women need. Not only can better living help alleviate symptoms, it helps reduce the health risks associated with diminishing hormonal levels. Lifestyle changes can set the stage for better mental and physical health throughout menopause and beyond.

Seek professional advice on diet recommendations for menopause. Start exercising slowly, and avoid using alcohol, caffeine and nicotine. Menopause affects the mind and body, but the reverse is also true. Lifestyle directly affects how women experience menopause, and healthier choices can go a long way in alleviating symptoms and ensuring a healthier, happier transition into middle age.
